Diazepam is one of the main benzodiazepine tranquilizers. It has anxiolytic, central muscle relaxant, anticonvulsant, sedative and mild sedative effect. It shows little vegetative activity. The mechanism of action associates with GABA, which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS. The medicine reduces the activity of the enzyme GABA-transaminase in this way the content of GABA in the brain increasing. Anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant effect is due to inhibition of the cortical neurons and spinal cord centers. Inhibition of excitation in the ladder reticular system leads to the development of anxiolytic effect.
